My Personal Philosophy of Health, a School Assignment

Here is my personal philosophy of health. I had to do this as an assignment for my Health class, and I've decided it would be a good thing for me to share with others.

My Philosophy

My body is one of my most precious assets, and I want to keep it healthy and strong. To do this I’ve learned to respect, and take care of my body the best I can. If my body or mind aren’t working correctly, my life becomes increasingly difficult to enjoy.
Going into college, I thought I would do something with Outdoor Recreation because of my love for adventure and physical activity.  As I started thinking about my future career goals, I realized I wanted to do more than just have fun with people, I wanted to teach them about the importance of healthy bodies, and minds. After looking into my options, I realized a major in community and public health education would allow me to do just that.
Being active has been a part of my life since I was young. During high school I joined the track team, and later the cross country team, doing both sports until I graduated. My love for running lead me to a love for being active. Any outdoor adventure was exciting to me, I later found out I enjoy many types of exercise ( besides just running) with a few of my favorites being backpacking, canyoneering, hiking, and weightlifting.

Why I Believe in Health Education

I believe health education teaches the importance of having a healthy body and mind. Health is defined by someone’s ability to enjoy life free from physical, mental, social, or emotional limitations, it’s a dynamic of a person’s life that needs to be continuously worked on throughout their lifetime. I try my best to work on all areas of health, which for me means finding a balance between my physical, mental (this includes education and continually learning new things), emotional, and spiritual well-being.
We need health educators, and health education. Health Education provides knowledge on how to prevent, and take care of potential health problems. The goal of the health educator is to teach the individual, or individuals, how to make appropriate life style changes, necessary to fix or prevent health problems, and continue to make healthy life style choices a part of their life.
As a health educator, there are many ways to reach out to people. There are many different theories and philosophy’s to help teach people, and help them on their journey to healthier life styles. The two philosophy’s I feel best represent my approach to health education and behavior change are the Behavioral Change Theory, and the Decision-making Philosophy. To help individuals, Health Educators need to help people set goals and objectives for themselves, they also need to come up with solutions to the barriers to health they face in their lives. These two philosophy’s can help individuals change their lives in a more sustainable way. Which will hopefully help them continue to set goals, see improvements, and continue to work on making the lifestyle changes they need to be healthy.
I strongly believe, as a health educator, it’s my duty to teach people preventative measures so they can avoid health problems in the future, it’s also my duty to provide them with awareness, education and resources so they can make sustainable changes in their lives that will lead them to healthier, happier lifestyles.
